Tim Leahy

Dear Parents:

My name is Timothy Leahy. I’m an American from Rochester, New York. I graduated from the University of Rochester in 2006 and have been teaching in Asia since 2010, eight years which have been in Taiwan. I first traveled to Taiwan in 2011 and fell in love with country and culture. I have been married for five years to a local, have a 1.5 year old son and intend on spending the rest of my career here in Taiwan. My primary goal is to keep students engaged, active and interested in English. I set high, but achievable goals. I try very hard to build strong relationships with students, allow them to be themselves, encourage them and let them have fun while learning. I’m very excited about the upcoming activities, projects and school year and fun.

Sincerely, Tim Leahy

Xavier

Dear Parents, dear students,

Hello! My name is Xavier Bertrand. I come from Montreal, Canada. I am quite proud of my freezing hometown, but I left it to discover what was hiding on the other side of the world and what I found was worth the many difficulties that came along. I first lived in China for a year and then moved to Taiwan. Fuzhou (福州) is where I fell in love with two current passions of mine: Mandarin and teaching. Students can prove challenging, but the feeling of accomplishment generated by their understanding is something I can only ever find in a classroom. My teaching philosophy was influenced by four years of successes and many failures. The prying eyes of others often cause us to give up an opportunity to learn, succeed, or grow because we are afraid of failure. Perhaps we forget that we all fell many times over when learning to walk. In a sense, I am jealous of mistakes because they will forever be better teachers than me. That is why I encourage students to take chances, try to answer questions, and learn from their mistakes. In class, students will learn and hopefully, they will grow. Together we will laugh, shout, speak, play, and move. We will leave boredom for chemistry teachers (I was never good at chemistry. Sorry, Mister LaPorte.) All jokes aside, I am very happy to find myself in Ming-Der Senior High

School. Yours truly,Teacher Bertrand

ERIC

Dear Parents and Students,:

My name is Eric Ferguson. I'm from Washington State in the US. After finally graduating from university, I taught English for one year in South Korea. I found that I enjoyed teaching ESL, and after a brief hiatus back home, I ended up here in Taiwan. I have been living and teaching here since 2011, and plan on being here for many more years.

I am married and have 2 beautiful children, my oldest is starting kindergarten here at Ming-Der this year. I enjoy playing music, photography, and spending time with my family.

I like to say that I am a fun-loving teacher who tries to keep learning fun for the students. I encourage students to try to think for themselves, and also to think outside the box. I want them to leave my classes knowing that they will be able to face the real world as best they can. I expect my students to show respect to me, themselves, and their classmates. I will discipline students when called for, but not to the detriment of their learning.

I'm looking forward to what we have in store for this school year at Ming-Der Senior High. We have a lot of fun activities, projects and presentations to do this year.

Sincerely,

Mr. Ferguson
